First book in the Dragonriders of Pern series, this book definitely gets things off to a good start, introducing us to this world of dragons through Lessa, the servant girl who can hear dragons in her mind. As the threat of silvery parasites from the sky approaches, it becomes the responsibility of the dragonriders to convince the population of Pern of the oncoming threat, and for them to again rise to a challenge they have faced in generations past.

Definitely a well-written book, entertaining in its own right, but a wonderful introduction to the world of Pern and all its stories to come.

I would just like to add that this whole series of books is absolutely fantastic. It can be a little confusing at times, but having read all of them at least twice, I've most definately got my head round it xD There are currently 21 books, the latest few of which are written or co-written by Anne's son Todd. There are at least two more collaborations planned between the two. The amazing things about these books is that they follow so many different characters in different times, that you build up an understanding of the whole community, landscapes and general life and history on Pern. The whole series is a thouroughly good read and I most highly recommend it.
